Senator Chuck Schumer was in Owego Friday morning to talk about a bill he is sponsoring on Hemp. Schumer said that hemp is wrongly classified as a controlled substance. The plant looks very similar to marijuana, but its chemical compound is entirely different, and it does not have the effect on people that marijuana has. The Hemp Farming Act will have hemp regulated by the states rather than the federal government and will ease commercial restrictions on hemp products. Schumer said the bill has bipartisan support and has already passed in the senate.
