The Tioga County Legislature will vote today on their budget proposal for 2016. The proposal includes a tax levy increase of 2% with a total budget of $77.5 Million. About $64.3 Million dollars of that though is state mandated spending, meaning the county cannot cut expenses in those areas.
Sales tax is usually used by the county to help offset these mandated costs, however, lower gas prices this year meant fewer sales tax dollars for the county. Tioga County Legislature Chairwoman Martha Sauerbrey says though that continued economic development is promising for future budgets. Chairwoman Sauerbrey went on to say that leaders within the county government continue to focus on working within the county’s means.
The Legislature will begin tonight’s meeting at 6PM in the Hubbard Auditorium at the Tioga County Office Building with proclamations honoring the state champion Owego volleyball team and the Tioga Tigers Football team.
