Today marks the day for the start of the Tioga County Fair. Today’s main attraction is the New York Sire Stakes races. The superintendent of harness racing at the Tioga County Fair, Jim Mead, visited the WEBO Morning Show today to talk about today’s races, which feature 44 horses total. Those 44 horses will be competing in ten races. One of the reasons for bringing horse racing back to the fair at Marvin Park in Owego, which needed to have its racetrack completely redone, is the history of horse racing in New York. Mead says that of the approximately 47 betting horse tracks in the United States, eight are in New York.
For the opening day, the fair has free admission until 5 o’clock, which includes admission to the horse races. Senior citizens have free admission all day today, the midway opens at 5 o’clock, and there will also be a fireworks show at 9 o’clock tonight. General admission tickets are $8.
