Some details are starting to emerge on Sanmina’s Thursday announcement that it would be closing the Owego plant in March. It has been reported that 50 contract workers were let go yesterday. The remaining 274 workers were given 90-days notice of the impending closure. While some may receive transfer offers, it is expected that most of the 274 will be terminated on March 7th. Tioga County Legislature Chairwoman Martha Sauerbrey says that the County’s Economic Development group has mobilized to search for a replacement employer for the facility. Sanmina has not given a reason for the closure, but they have been moving manufacturing to locations with lower labor costs.
