Adam Weitsman said he is negotiating acquisitions of three competitors in the Albany region. Weitsman, owner of Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling, said he underestimated the volume of metal that would be scrapped in Albany, signaling the need to expand upstate. They were anticipating 100 customers a day, and get more than 400 customers a day. The Owego-based metal recycler processes more than 16,000 tons of scrap motors, car bodies and appliances at its Albany locations each month. Weitsman says that number will nearly triple when the company completes construction of a $15 million metal processor and shredder at the Port of Albany next year. Weitsman said he plans to hire 35 additional employees when construction at the port completes next year. The company’s next move will be to expand into New Jersey.
