A petition is circulating online looking to make the Owego Post Office more handicap accessible.

Bethany Butler started the petition because her mother, an Owego resident who is wheel-chair bound, has been facing issues over the years with lack of accessibility at the United States Post Office on Lake Street.

Due to the lack of handicap accessible entrance, residents who have a disability have to call the post office in advance for someone to meet them outside to do their business.

There is a sign on the side of the building stating there is handicapped service available in the back of the building, but according to Butler, she has been told that is no longer the case at the Owego Post Office.

Butler is urging the post office to correct the issue and make the facility more handicap accessible. She has sent a proposal to the Owego Mayor’s Office and also sent a complaint to the US Postal Service and filed two complaints with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

However, according to WBNG-TV, the US Postal Service issued a statement saying the post office is not subject to the ADA.

As of Tuesday night, Butler’s petition had received over 50 signatures.
