The New York State Department of Transportation has officially designated a stretch of State Route 17 in Broome and Tioga Counties as Interstate 86.

The highway is now officially Interstate 86 between Exit 60 in Waverly and Exit 67 in Endicott.

The 32-mile stretch was approved as an interstate by the Federal Highway Administration.

New York DOT officials said the conversion of this roadway will increase driver safety as interstate highways require more safety measures and will be given more extensive maintenance.
