A student in Tompkins County collapsed in school last week after using a vape that was laced with fentanyl.
The student reportedly inhaled one time on what they thought was a marijuana vaping device and collapsed in a hallway in the school.
Multiple doses of NARCAN were administered and the student was then transported to a local hospital.
Testing showed that the vape contained fentanyl. It was purchased at an unlicensed convenience store not legally allowed to sell marijuana products.
The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the case.
The Tioga Central School District put out a statement urging parents to talk with their children about this incident.
The Tioga County Public Health Department also issued a warning about the dangers of fentanyl-laced products and the importance of having access to NARCAN.
The department also reminded residents to only purchase cannabis products from New York State licensed dispensaries, where products are regulated and tested for safety.

In response to a recent suspected incident involving a marijuana vape laced with Fentanyl in our region, Tioga County Public Health is urging residents to take precautions to protect themselves and others from potential overdose.
This situation is an unfortunate reminder of the dangers of unregulated products, including cannabis vapes, edibles, and counterfeit pills. We want our community to know that Narcan (naloxone) is free and widely available in Tioga County — and it can save lives.
Residents are reminded to only purchase cannabis products from New York State licensed dispensaries, where products are regulated and tested for safety. Illicit products can contain deadly substances, including Fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid.
Narcan Nasal Spray is a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Community members are encouraged to keep it on hand and learn how to use it.
Know the Signs of an Overdose:
Slow or no breathing
Unresponsiveness
Pinpoint pupils
Cold, clammy skin
Blue lips and/or nails
Slow heartbeat
If you suspect someone is overdosing call 911 immediately and administer Narcan if available. Time is critical in saving a life.
Free overdose prevention kits with Narcan are available throughout Tioga County at Public Access Narcan (PAN) Boxes.
