Tioga County legislators voted unanimously on two items during their monthly meeting yesterday. An empty lot on Route 434 in the village of Owego has sat vacant for more than a decade — but now, there are plans to build a mixed income senior apartment complex. Edgemere Development signed a contract to purchase the land from Tioga County’s Industrial Development Agency. The complex — called Owego Gardens — would include 62 units for people 55 years and older. The Tioga County Legislature voted unanimously yesterday to approve and endorse the IDA’s application for water development financial assistance from the state. The county hopes to see construction start in September. Along with the senior living center, the county anticipates building office space, satellite medical offices and more at the site.
Also at yesterday’s meeting, legislators unanimously approved a local law to allow use of sparklers and small fireworks in the county. Tioga County now joins 32 other counties statewide in allowing these light fireworks to be sold and used. But there are some restrictions: sales will only be permitted on or between June 1st through July 5th, and Dec. 26th and Jan. 2nd.
