(Vestal, NY) – Binghamton University welcomes new and returning students and their families to campus starting Thursday, Aug. 18, with move-in days signifying the beginning of the fall semester and a new academic year.
As always, you can expect traffic congestion on the Vestal Parkway East during move-in days as initially 3,000 first-year students, 900 transfer students and 1,500 new graduate students get settled in the Binghamton community, and then the remainder of BU’s approximately 18,600 students arrive over the weekend with all classes starting on Tuesday, Aug. 23.
Yes, the students do bring an new influx of money from out of the immediate area. Only five percent of new students are from Broome and Tioga counties; about 35 percent of new students are from upstate New York; 23 percent are from Long Island; and 26 percent are from New York City.
Binghamton received a record 50,100 applications this year, which includes nearly 41,700 first-year, 3,900 transfer and over 4,500 graduate student applications for fall 2022 admission.
The 41,700 undergraduate applications for acceptance into the Class of 2026 is also a new record and five- percent more than last year’s record. This includes increases in out-of-state and international applications.
