Vestal High School student government members wanted to assist victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, but weren’t sure what would capture fellow students’ interest. Senior Emily Miller thought a singing competition would be fun, so on Friday, May 20, during student lunch periods, Vestal High School will be holding its first-ever “Vestal Idol” in the courtyard outside the cafeteria. Students get an “Act” form from the school’s main office and must collect $20 in “sponsors” to compete. There will be winners each lunch period, and the proceeds from Vestal Idol will be donated to the Japanese Relief Fund through the American Red Cross. The renovated courtyard at Vestal High School opened last year with a Courtyard Café event featuring student talent, and just a week ago student volunteers were busy getting it and the area near the entrance to the school weeded and cleaned. The first lunch period begins at 11 a.m. and the last period ends at 1:10 p.m.
