The Village of Watkins Glen has a long history of car racing and this year marks the 50th anniversary of the first Formula One at Watkins Glen.
The first U.S. Grand Prix, which later become part of the Formula One Championship, was held at Watkins Glen in 1961 and stayed there until 1980. Race historians say the Formula One race put Watkins Glen on the international racing map.
The International Motor Racing Research Center will hold events throughout 2011 to commemorate the historic anniversary.
