An Elmira woman has been charged with attempting to defraud a charity.
49-year-old Carmen Vasquez is facing a charge of attempted petit larceny, a misdemeanor. Elmira Police say the woman signed up five children, who do not exist, to receive gifts from the Arctic League on Christmas. The charity has handed out toys on Christmas morning to the needy families of Chemung County for over 96 years, according to their website.
Vasquez was given an appearance ticket and released.
Elmira City Police say they received help in their investigation from the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office.
