Woman arrested after leaving infant in car while shopping at Price Chopper in Cortland

On August 14th, about 2:27 PM, officers with the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office responded to Price Chopper, 854 Route 13, Town of Cortlandville, for a welfare check. It was discovered that Joelene M. Cooper, 39, of Cortland, left an infant inside her unoccupied vehicle for an extended amount of time while she was in the store.

Deputies daid Cooper was located inside the store and taken into custody. The infant, whose age was not included in a press release from the sherrif’s office, was evaluated at the scene by TLC ambulance and was turned over to a family member.

Cooper was charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child and transported to the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office where she was processed and arraigned through the centralized arraignment process. Cooper was released on her own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Cortlandville Court on August 15.
