Woman Dead in I-88 Crash in Chenango County

A woman is dead after crashing her van into a tractor trailer Monday afternoon on an ice-covered interstate outside of Afton, according to Chenango County Fire services and the Chenango County medical examiner.
The crash happened shortly before 2 p.m. Monday on Interstate 88 near exit 7 in Afton. The crash closed the eastbound lanes between exits 6 and 8 in Harpursville and Bainbridge for several hours.
The Chenango County Medical Examiner said the female driver of the van, died when the vehicle spun as she entered the highway and was struck by a tractor trailer. The woman’s 4-year-old son and sister, who were also in the van, were taken to Wilson Hospital with unknown injuries.
The driver of the tractor trailer was also taken to Wilson Hospital with unknown injuries.
The eastbound side of the highway reopened at approximately 6 p.m., although crews were still reconstructing the accident at 7 p.m.
