New York State Electric and Gas is preparing for high winds across the Southern Tier of New York, beginning early Thursday. As a result of the winds, customers may experience service disruptions in all areas served by NYSEG.
Current forecasts call for some snow in the Southern Tier but little accumulation compared to heavy snow in extreme northern counties through Friday. With this storm system, winds could gust up to 50 mph. High winds have the potential to bring down trees and limbs, causing damage to overhead power lines and other electrical equipment.
National Weather Service at Greater Binghamton Airport has issued a wind advisory effective until 1 a.m. Friday. The advisory covers Chemung, Tompkins, Cortland, Chenango, Tioga, Broome, Delaware and Bradford counties, including Elmira, Ithaca, Cortland, Norwich, Oneonta, Owego, Waverly, Binghamton, Sayre and Towanda.
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo directed state agencies Wednesday to deploy storm response assets to upstate areas where wind and snow are expected.
NYSEG urges customers to monitor forecasts and prepare for the possibility of service interruptions. The company’s storm readiness team has monitoring weather forecasts, planning and readying crews and equipment to respond to outages.
NYSEG will provide updates on its website and social media channels (Facebook and Twitter). Your Hometown Station WEBO airs AccuWeather forecasts on the hour and half hour all day, everyday. WEBO is also an emergency broadcast station.
