Opening Arguments Made in Tom Libous Trial

Opening arguments began yesterday morning for the trial of New York State Senator Tom Libous. He is being tried in federal court on one count of making false statements to the FBI. Both the prosecution and defense took more than 30 minutes to lay out their cases. After opening statements, five different witnesses took the stand. All were called by the prosecution. Both the prosecution and the defense anticipate the trial will last one to two weeks. Prosecutors said they plan to call between 8 and 10 witnesses.

The defense said it doesn’t know how many witnesses it plans to call yet.
