Southern Tier Memorial wrestling tournament returning to First Arena this weekend

ELMIRA — The second annual Southern Tier Memorial wrestling tournament is set for Friday and Saturday here at the First Area, with 36 teams in the field, including, Sayre, SVEC, Tioga, Waverly, and new this year, Athens.

Joining Athens as newcomers to the field from Pa. are: Troy, South Williamsport, Danville,  Lackawanna Trail, Chambersburg, and  Scranton Prep.

New to the field from New York are: Schuyler, Norwich, Chenango Valley, Sherburne-Earlville, Batavia, and West Genesee.

A.I. DuPont of Delaware is also new to the tournament.

Returning this year from New York are:  BGAH, Horseheads, Elmira, Vestal, Corning, Johnson City,  Thomas A. Edison, Dryden, Union-Endicott, Addison, Copenhagen, Auburn, St. Anthonys, and Tottenville.

Returning this year from Pa. are: North Penn-Liberty, Williamson, Wyoming Area, Milton (PA) Bellefonte Area.

There are also several teams that will sending just its girls teams: Windsor, Homer, Hughesville, Oneonta, Northeast Bradford, and Sidney.

Last year’s team champion, Lake Highland Prep out of Florida, and Longwood, which finished fourth, and Sidney are the only teams not returning from last year.

Tioga finished second in the boys field last year, while Bellefonte was third, and Horseheads was fifth.

On the girls side, Athens, Waverly, Horseheads, Tottenville, and Tioga comprises the top five in the team standings.

High school action will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday.

There will also be a youth tournament held Sunday at the First Arena.
