NY State Police: Getting Reports of Email Scam Using Scare Tactics in Southern Tier

SHARE NOW

New York State Police have received several reports of email scams using scare tactics. The email scam demands the person who receives the email pay a Bitcoin ransom in order to keep alleged sexually explicit videos from being sent to all the contacts in the person’s email and social media contacts.

The email contains personal information, sometimes the person’s password or a password similar to the actual password.

These emails are fake, do not send any money. In most cases, ignore the email and change the password to your account. Do not open any links that you are not familiar with.

If you have lost money in an scam, contact the New York State Police or your local law enforcement agency.
