There are several updates related to last week’s flash flood event:
The flooding last week has resulted in approximately 238 million gallons of untreated sewage to be dumped into the Susquehanna River in Binghamton. The Binghamton/Johnson City Sewage Treatment Plant has reduced capacity due to construction activity. Though even at full capacity, the system would have been overwhelmed by last week’s event. As a side note, the Susquehanna River is a major drinking water source for Binghamton.
Hickories Park reopened yesterday at noon, six days after experiencing flash flooding during last week’s storm. The north side of the park, which includes the Rebecca Weitsman Memorial Dog Park, will remain closed for a while longer.
Town of Owego Supervisor Don Castellucci has announced that the Long Creek Road Bridge in Apalachin will have a five ton weight restriction until further notice.
Officials in Broome County responded to incorrect online reports that FEMA would be coming to the county. The Broome County Director of Emergency Services, Michael Ponticello, has confirmed that FEMA will NOT be coming as of now. The county is currently assessing the damage to the county’s infrastructure. If the damage estimates reach certain financial thresholds, a FEMA request may be made.
