This is something you don’t see everyday. New York State Police at Richfield Springs and a local farmer are asking for the public’s help in locating approximately 75 escaped buffaloes. The owner of the buffaloes, Brian, has asked anyone who sees them to contact him so he bring them back to his farm. State Police warn the public not to approach the buffaloas because they are a wild animal and can be unpredictable.
On July 25, troopers were dispatched to Honey Hill Road in Roseboom, in northeastern Otsego County, after they received a report that several buffaloes were eating second-cutting hay still growing in fields, resulting in no forage that could be harvested. They were also eating first-cutting round bales of hay. The troopers learned that a buffalo broke a gate allowing approximately 75 buffaloes to escape from a farm in the Town of Sharon, in Schoharie County. There are at least 30 adult buffaloes, including three bulls and 45 calves; with approximately half of those calves being bulls.
State troopers worked with a Department of Environmental Conservation officer and the owner of the buffaloes last week to devise a plan to corral and funnel the buffaloes. However, it is believed they have already moved from the area. Reports of the buffaloes have been on Mill Pond Road in Town of Schohaire to Pleasant Brook in the Town of Roseboom.
If you see any of the buffaloes, contact Brian at (518) 588-1402 or State Police at Richfield Springs at (315) 858-1122.
