It was a deadly weekend in the City of Ithaca. Two people died in separate incidents within 90 minutes of each other and both in Six Mile Creek off Fulton Street. Police said the first happened just after 5 p.m. Saturday near Agway when police responded to a report of a body floating in the waterway behind the railroad bridge off Fulton. The body was discovered by Kayakers paddling through the channel. Police identified the victim as 31-year-old Wendi Owens of Enfirled. She was believed to be in the water for a few hours or less prior to her discovery. The investigation is ongoing.
Then police said a vehicle crashed into the Creek, landing on its roof. Ithaca police said they observed a heroic bystander in the water attempting to hold the drivers head out of the water. The driver later died at Cayuga Medical Center. A passenger was not injured and a dog was also rescued. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
