A Weitsman tractor trailer operating on upper North Avenue in Owego caught fire Monday afternoon. The tractor trailer was hauling crushed cars to the shredding facility on Route 38 when it caught fire near the Kwik Fill gas station. Owego Firefighters requested assistance from Candor Fire to extinguish the cars, as they were removed from the trailer by a grapple from Weitsman’s facility. The late afternoon fire caused a traffic detour as flames burned through overhead NYSEG, cable and telephone wires. There were no reported injuries. The fire department was on scene for several hours.
