Broome County continues to fight welfare fraud. County Executive Debbie Preston announced Wednesday that investigators busted $6.2 million in fraudulent claims last year. That’s from roughly 2,800 cases where fraud was positively identified. The Case Integrity Unit of Broome Security detected $3.1 million in benefits that were applied fraudulently. The other $3.1 million was uncovered through ongoing investigations by Broome Security. Preston says the county will continue working to make sure those who apply for public assistance truly need it. This is the most welfare fraud detected in a single year in the history of Broome County.
