Several protestors at a Watkins Glen energy company have been arrested. U.S. Salt, an energy company which has a facility along Seneca Lake, is proposing to store Liquified Petroleum Gas in containers along the lake. While the company says the new expansion will create dozens of local jobs, some people in the area are concerned about possible emissions from the petroleum tanks. Protestors originally started holding up signs on Monday arguing with the company’s decision. The protest escalated when people began to link arms on U.S. Salt property, eventually leading to several people being charged with trespassing. Those arrested are scheduled to appear in the town of Reading Court, and could face jail time or fines. Both sides of the conflict are currently awaiting to hear if the Department of Environmental Conservation will grant a permit for the project.
