The Chenango Forks fire chief has been charged for misappropriation of his fire company’s property. 57-year-old Lewis Merritt was arrested on Sunday after he was accused of falsifying paperwork to obtain a vehicle for personal use, which had been donated to the fire company. The vehicle in question was donated to the fire company by a downstate New York fireman’s fund. Merritt was taken into custody and charged in the Town of Dickinson. He is being charged with official misconduct, a misdemeanor, along with offering a false instrument for filing, a felony. He was released on an appearance ticket and expected in the City of Binghamton Court at a later date.
