Just two days before voting to sell the Greenman Senior Center to a local nonprofit, a last-minute offer forces City Council to reconsider.
The Lane Construction Company presented a letter of interest Monday to Binghamton City Council for the empty Greenman Senior Center, at 37 Pine St. The building has been empty for almost a year and a half.
The construction company wants to use the building as office space. They’re offering $105,000, $30,000 more than the original asking price. The company started looking at the property last week. Council already has a binding offer from the nonprofit Opportunities for Broome.
Council members say having a private company buy the building may cut down on taxes for city residents. Council will vote Wednesday whether Opportunities for Broome can buy the property. If enough votes don’t go the nonprofit’s way, the Lane Construction Company will be permitted to move forward.
