A child and two adults are dead after a fire in Chenango County. Police were called to the Afton home at 11:38 Saturday night. When they arrived at the Warren Lane home, it was fully engulfed in fire. Crews were able to bring the fire under control in 45 minutes, but during the investigation, they found three bodies in the bedrooms of the home. Police say 11-year-old Craig Gohl, 45-year-old Nathan Herbert, and 54-year-old Anna Ebert, were all pronounced dead at the scene. Autopsies were performed Sunday, on the individuals in Binghamton, and it was determined they died from asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning. The fire appears to have started near the couch of the living room, possibly from smoking materials near the fabrics. The home did not have any working smoke detectors. Afton and Bainbridge Volunteer Fire Departments, Investigators from the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, and the Chenango County Fire Investigation Team are assisting with the ongoing investigation.
