After a lengthy discussion between village trustees, the mayor, police, and public; the Village of Endicott is continuing talks about a possible merger that would combine the Endicott Police Department with the Broome County Sheriff’s office. Concerns from officers who requested that the Police Benevolent Association have a voice in the discussion resulted in the board forming a committee that will lead those talks. Many say a merger is still far away, because the details of a contract have not been fully discussed yet. According to Broome County Sheriff David Harder, if the merger happens, 28 police officers would become Sheriff’s deputies and continue to patrol the village. The move could save Endicott anywhere from $200,000 to $1 million, and would not cost the county any money at all.
