New York State Senator Thomas Libous is leaving his post as head of the Senate Republican Campaign committee. Libous has decided to leave the position as he deals with ongoing health issues. The Binghamton Republican held the position during both the 2010 and 2012 elections, as he guided the Republicans back to power after the Democrats won the majority in 2008. He will be succeeded by Senator Cathy Young of Olean, who will be the first woman to hold the position. Libvous is the second-highest ranking member in the Senate Republican conference, and has been struggling with cancer, which he was first diagnosed with in 2009. All 63 seats in the Senate are up for election next year, and Republicans lost the majority in New York in the 2012 elections. Democrats currently control the State Assembly, and Governor Cuomo is also a Democrat.
