New York residents who get new drivers licenses from the DMV in the next few weeks will be seeing some security changes, and a new look to their ID. New licenses will be firmer with laser etched black and white photos, with two photos on the card, and an embedded signature on the scannable bar code. The black and white photos are thought to be easier to use to identify people, hopefully leading to less fake-ID use. New York has also decided to adopt a simple security feature many other states already use: making licenses for those 21 and older have a vertical layout. Residents under 21 will still have the traditional horizontal layout for their ID, making it easier to instantly spot whether someone is legally old enough to drink. By the end of September, all DMV offices in the state will issue these new licenses.
