Recent black bear activity in the village of Endicott has police reminding people about what they can do to keep the animals away. Police say to keep garbage properly stored so that the smell doesn’t bring bears around. Police also say remove bird feeders during times when bears are active. In addition, police say do not approach, surround or attempt to touch a bear, and always leave a clear escape route for the animal. For those who may feel threatened by a bear, police say back away slowly. If the bear will not leave, police say make loud noises, such as clapping, blowing a car horn or drumming on nearby objects.
