The Town of Vestal received approval from the State of New York to move forward with flood buyouts for a number of homes destroyed by the flood in 2011. Town Supervisor John Schaffer announced on Tuesday that the town had received the news of approval, which will allow it to purchase fifty-eight homes that were damaged beyond repair during the flood. The fifty-eight homes represent all of the Vestal residents that are interested in the town’s buyout program. Letters have been sent to all of the interested homeowners to begin the process. Once Vestal buys the homes, the town has ninety days to demolish the structures and turn the land into greenspace. Schaffer said the town will offer the cleared land to adjacent property owners at a discounted price.
