A man shot a masked intruder at his home in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania Monday evening. The alleged intruder, 31-year-old Francis Muchanic of Susquehanna, knocked on the door at 948 Creek Road in New Milford just after 7:30 Monday night and told the homeowner he was experiencing car troubles and needed to use the phone.
The 69-year-old homeowner answered the door while holding a loaded Smith & Wesson revolver, and tried to shut the door on Muchanic when he saw he was wearing a mask. That’s when Muchanic allegedly forced his way inside and knocked the homeowner on the ground, resulting in the homeowner firing three shots, striking Muchanic once in the groin area.
According to police, the two people who drove Muchanic to the house, 20-year-old Dylan Brewer and 20-year-old Evan Hess, fled in the a vehicle after hearing the shots. Muchanic’s girlfriend, 30-year-old Erica Major, called 911 and reported that her boyfriend had been shot while attempting to help a disabled motorist on Interstate 81 in Great Bend Township. She then drove Muchanic to a rest area on the interstate to meet troopers.
Muchanic was taken to Wilson Hospital and was listed in critical condition. He is being charged with robbery, theft, receiving stolen property, simple assault, and criminal conspiracy. Major was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, theft by unlawful taking, and receiving stolen property. The drivers, Brewer and Hess, were charged with criminal attempted theft and conspiracy to commit robbery.
