The region’s unemployment rate dropped nearly two percent from a year ago. Last December the unemployment rate sat at 8.8 percent, and this year it’s down to 6.9 percent. The number of unemployed people in Tioga and Broome counties went from 10,200 in December 2012 to 7,800 last month. Unfortunately, the number of employed people also dropped by about 400 over that same span. Ithaca maintained the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 4.1 percent. Tompkins County not only saw its number of unemployed people drop by 900 over the past year, but it also gained 100 employed people.
