The towns of Vestal and Union will likely be seeing 115 flood-damaged homes be demolished within the next month. The demolition of 35 vacant houses in Vestal and 80 in Union are expected to begin after a federal buyout program calls for the government acquiring the property, demolishing all structures, and maintaining the parcel as an open space for public use. 77 more Union homes and 23 more Vestal homes are still awaiting buyouts. The properties that will be involved in this first round of demolitions have already been purchased by the towns, and the towns will be reimbursed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
