The Broome-Tioga Stormwater Coalition has announced its launching of a new public awareness campaign to spread the word on how protecting rainwater from pollution is vital in our area. Tioga County Legislative Chair Martha Sauerbrey released a statement to remind residents that rainwater runs over yards, streets, roads, highways, parking lots and parks, carrying along with it pollutants and debris that make their way into storm drains. According to officials, the storm drains have no water treatment, so any waste making its way into them will eventually end up in the water that we drink. These pollutants include fertilizers, car oils and greases, and yard clippings. The new public awareness campaign is designed to encourage residents to do their part to keep their yards and properties clean of debris. The Broome-Tioga Stormwater Coalition is made up of 15 municipalities. More information on their campaign can be found online at water from rain dot org.
