The Southern Tier is no stranger to disasters. To make sure you are organized before the next disaster hits, the state is offering training on what you need to prepare. Governor Andrew Cuomo made a stop at Binghamton University on Saturday to kick off a “Citizens Preparedness Training Program”. The goal of the session is to educate people on preparing, responding and recovering in the event of an emergency or a disaster. The lessons taught, range from stocking up on water, to coming up with a family meeting point. The state hopes to train 100,000 New Yorkers throughout the year. At the end of the training session, the National Guard handed out emergency preparedness starter kits. Inside the bag were different items including a water bottle, first aid kid, and gloves. Cuomo also announced that New York will have the first college in the country to train first responders. No timeline on that was announced.
