Teams of local professional and student engineers gathered in the Oakdale Mall on Sunday to help fight hunger in a unique way. Volunteers worked together to stack cans on cans as part of a hunger-relief competition. With over 17,000 cans of food, teams worked to create different structures and objects out of cans. The final products will be left in the halls of the Oakdale Mall throughout the week for passersby to enjoy the work. After that, the cans will be donated to CHOW. An additional $15,000 from sponsors was also raised to help support the Food Bank of the Southern Tier’s Backpack Program, which helps children receive good nutrition on the weekends when they aren’t at school.
