A judge has ruled that Cornell University and the City of Ithaca can be tried for negligence regarding the suicide of a student. 18-year-old Bradley Ginsburg died in 2010 after a jump from the Thurston Avenue Bridge. Now Bradley’s father, Howard Ginsburg, is suing the school and the city for knowing the bridges were dangerous without doing anything about it. Two other Cornell students committed suicide off of local bridges shortly following Bradley’s death, with six students overall taking their own lives in the 2009-2010 school year. Since then, chain link fencing and permanent netting was installed on all gorge bridges across the campus. The judge ruled that Cornell and Ithaca could not be sued for personal injury or conscious pain and suffering, but a wrongful death lawsuit will be able to go to trial.
