A possible mobile methamphetamine lab was the cause for a police chase and car crash early Monday morning. A Waverly police officer chased a red Jeep after the officer observed the Jeep commit a number of traffic violations on Chemung Street around 1:30 in the morning on Monday. The Jeep then sped away on Orange Street before being located about 15 minutes later, damaged and abandoned in a backyard on Waverly Street. No injuries were reported, and police believe it was just one person in the vehicle who was able to get away. Officials say they have one or two suspects at this time but are not releasing names. Inside the crashed Jeep, officers found a number of suspicious items that were indicative of a meth lab. The New York State Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Team had to come to the scene, and declared it safe by ten o’clock Monday morning. The Waverly-Barton Fire Department and Greater Valley EMS assisted police on the scene, and the investigation is ongoing.
