Heavy demolition of the Ellis Brothers furniture store in Binghamton was officially underway Tuesday, with all four stories of the building knocked down by the early afternoon. The demolition comes after city engineers and private engineers agreed last week that the building was a public safety hazard following a devastating fire that ripped through the store back on April 30th. Crowds of people watched the Water Street building come down. The street remains closed while demolition continues. Once all debris is removed, both lanes of traffic on Water Street will be reopened, according to the city. That process could take up to three weeks.
