A fire at a Broome County packaging facility was doused by the employees of the company before fire crews arrived on the scene. Friday afternoon, a fire was reported at International Paper at 1240 Conklin Road in Conklin. Flames reportedly broke out inside a machine that bundles used cardboard to be recycled. The fire was knocked down by employees using a hose before fire departments arrived on the scene. The building was evacuated for about an hour while crews worked to put out burning embers and clear smoke from the building. The exact cause of what sparked the flames within the machine remains under investigation. No significant damage was reported inside the building. Fire departments from Conklin, Binghamton, Kirkwood, Hallstead, and Five Mile Point all responded.
