The Lucas Oil Super Sprint feature race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park led to the death of Kevin Ward Jr. after he exited his vehicle on the track. NASCAR driver, Tony Stewart collided with Kevin Ward’s vehicle during the 14th lap of the race, which sent Ward and his vehicle colliding into the wall. Stewart kept driving. However, Ward exited the vehicle and stood in the middle of the race track, forcing drivers to swerve around him. Tony Stewart’s vehicle, after making another lap, slammed into Ward as he stood on the track. Ward was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Ontario County Sheriff’s office, as of 5PM Sunday evening, has said that Stewart is not facing any criminal charges. The Ontario County Sheriff Phil Pavero has asked anyone with footage of the incident, or who witnessed the incident first-hand to contact the sheriff’s office. They are also asking anyone with extensive knowledge of dirt track racing to contact the Ontario County Sheriff’s office to help with forensic analysis of the case. The Ontario County district attorney has been reviewing the case. Sheriff Pavero has also said that Stewart has been fully cooperating with the investigation.
