An early morning gas leak in Elmira forces residents to evacuate. 610-611 Columbia Street are being evacuated this morning after the Elmira Police Department say they were in the area when they smelt the gas around 2AM this morning. They believe it could be from a possible burglary of copper pipping. The police also say levels are extremely high which may cause a serious explosion. They warn people to stay away from the area. NYSEG and the fire department are on scene trying to control the levels. Most neighbors have left the area to go with family and friends but if they need housing Elmira College has room for those evacuated. Or if you need assistance call the Elmira Police Department at 737-5626.
