The son of New York Senator Tom Libous was convicted of tax fraud yesterday in U.S. District Court. In July, Matthew Libous, was indicted by a federal grand jury in White Plains on one count of obstructing the IRS in its administration of the tax laws and five counts of subscribing to false tax returns. Yesterday, a U.S. District Court judge found Libous guilty of three counts of subscribing to false tax returns. Each count carries a maximum penalty of three years, according to the United States Department of Justice. Libous could serve three to nine years in prison, depending on whether the judge orders him to carry out the terms consecutively or concurrently. Matthew Libous is scheduled to be sentenced on April 29.
