An Ithaca woman is dead and two others are injured after an accident involving a garbage truck early Wednesday morning. The crash happened on Mecklenburg Road in the town of Enfield. New York State Police said a Casella Waste Management garbage truck was partly parked on the shoulder while the driver was collecting trash from the side of the road. A pickup truck driven by Paul Carl of Ithaca, then hit the garbage truck from behind. A passenger in the pickup truck, Ashley Hair, was airlifted to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. Officials said she later died of massive head injuries. Carl was also airlifted to the hospital with head injuries. An additional passenger in the pickup truck, Jacob Carl, was taken to Cayuga Medical Center for leg pain. The New York State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit assisted at the scene.
