An agreement in principle has been reached between IBM and residents in Endicott who suffered injuries as a result of environmental contamination caused, at least in part, by the computer manufacturer at its North Street facility. The agreement was announced via a joint statement late last night. The statement said the settlements will avoid “expensive litigation.” Despite the proposed agreement, an IBM spokesman said the company is still committed to the ongoing environmental cleanup at its former Endicott facility. IBM is blamed in part for contaminating ground, water and air with TCE, which was declared a carcinogen in 2011. The statement released yesterday said attorneys for property owners are expected to discuss the settlement with their clients in the coming days and weeks. The terms of the settlement were not released.
