Local firefighters and others from around the Southern Tier participated in the annual 9/11 Stair Climb Sunday. The participants paid tribute to the 343 F-D-N-Y firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11. The stairs climbed were in the Binghamton State Office Building. Participants climbed the equivalent of 110 stories, the same found in the World Trade Center, and each person represented one or more of the firefighters who died in the attack, saying their names and entering the building to begin climbing. A bell was rung twice in honor of each firefighter. The event was a benefit for the FDNY Counseling Service Unit and other programs that support the families affected by the tragedy. More than 150 people participated in the event’s seventh year.
