The city of Binghamton is taking a more proactive approach combating crime, rolling out its “Safe City” initiative. 15 stationary license plate readers have been installed in 8 different locations throughout the city. The readers keep track of all vehicles entering the city AND alert police when they spot a vehicle tied to suspects in open cases. Police have already made arrests since the devices were installed. The readers have also helped in collecting outstanding fines from drivers. The city plans to add 7 more license plate readers by early next year.
